In Lecture 17, we began by discussing the difference between the "average" and the "maximum likelihood estimate" using the example of "years neede to graduate with an ECE degree". We subsequently finished illustrating the concept of conditional probability for discrete random variables. We then covered the concept of independent discrete random variables, which concluded Part II of the material. (See the Course Outline here.) We then began Part III of the material with a definition of the concept of "continuous random variable" along with two examples.

Action items for students (to be completed before next lecture)

  • Solve problems 3.52, 3.53, 5.65, 3.69 in the textbook. (These will be part of the fourth homework assignment, to be handed in later.)
