In linear programming , a slack variable is referred to as an additional variable that has been introduced to the optimization problem to turn a inequality constraint into an equality constraint. This procedure is often performed to formulate linear optimization problems into a form which can be efficiently solve using a fast algorithm: the simplex algorithm. As a result a slack variable is always positive since this is a requirement for variables in the simplex method.
