On April 11 and 12, 2014 (a Friday afternoon and Saturday morning), Rose-Hulman will host the 31st iteration of its annual Undergraduate Mathematics Conference.  The goal of this conference is to spotlight and celebrate the accomplishments and work of undergraduate mathematicians.  As such, the bulk of the talks are given by undergraduates.  This is a great chance for students to present results obtained in independent studies or senior theses done over the course of this academic year, as well as mathematics done in an REU or other summer research project.  Student talks are 20 minutes in length. Due to the generosity of Maplesoft, Metron, the MAA, Minitab, and (perhaps) others, there are no registration fees for the conference, and the first 40 students to register will be provided with free accommodations (rooms at the local Quality Inn, including a free breakfast).  Meals (Friday dinner and Saturday lunch) will also be provided.

The theme of our plenary talks this year is "Big Computation, Big Data."   We have several invited speakers, including David Womble from Sandia National Labs and Ralph Smith, associate director for the  Center for Research in Scientific Computing at North Carolina State University.  Both have a long list of accomplishments in this area, and are excellent speakers.  We will also have two panel discussions. One will focus on graduate school and involve graduate students, as well as the graduate programs directors from Indiana University and the U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  The other will focus on industrial careers for mathematicians.

Students who wish to speak can submit an abstract anytime up to April 7, 2014. For more information contact the organizers, Kurt Bryan (kurt.bryan@rose-hulman.edu) or Joe Eichholz (eichholz@rose-hulman.edu).   Kurt Bryan Joe Eichholz
