Definition

Complex numbers can be seen as points on a plane that extends in the x and y axis directions. They exist as + and - j values that are shown on the y axis (otherwise known as up and down) with a positive j being above the x axis and a negative j being shown below the x axis. These values come in very handy when they are shown through sine or cosine functions as imaginary numbers compared to their real counterparts that exist on the x axis as -1 and +1.
