What is a "Child Page"?

A child page is a page that inherits the categories of its parent (the page you are viewing when you click the "create a child page" link) as well as a return link to its parent.

Child pages were invented to address the problem of associating pages with their corresponding course. Currently, Rhea uses categories to tag pages with appropriate course labels. For this to work, every course needs to be associated with a unique category (so it can be distinguished from courses with the same title offered by other instructors in other semesters). Then every page that belongs to a given course needs to be put into the category of that course. A "child page" is a page that inherits all the categories of its parent (the page you are currently viewing when you click the "create a child page" link). So in particular, if you are currently viewing the course page for ECE111Fall09JohnSmith and click the "create a child page" link, you will create a page that falls into the category corresponding to ECE111Fall09JohnSmith. For convenience, the child page also automatically gets a return link to the page for ECE111Fall09JohnSmith. Of course, all of the corresponding source code can be modified later while editing if needed. As always, comments are welcome.

What happens when you click the "create a child page" link in the right side-bar:

  1. You will be prompted to enter the title of the page you wish to create.
  2. A page with that title will automatically be created. You will be taken to a window where you can view the source code of the page and edit it.
  3. You will notice that the source code already contains one or more categories, namely all the categories of the page you were viewing when you clicked the "create a child page" link. YOu may edit these categories if you wish.
  4. You will also notice that the source code already contains a return link to the parent page. Again you may edit this link if you wish.
